Therapeutic Exercise
Therapeutic exercise is the real "nuts and bolts" of your physical therapy treatment plan. Your Physical Therapist will design an exercise program to meet your particular needs and/or deficits. This will include various types of strengthening, range of motion, endurance and proprioceptive exercises:
Strengthening exercises can improve general muscle strength as well as specifically target weak muscles that need particular attention. Strengthening is also used to increase stability of the joints that have become hypermobile through injury or degenerative disease (arthritis).
Range of motion exercises improve flexibility of tight joints and muscles. They can be general or very focused on a particular muscle or joint depending on your specific needs.
Endurance exercise helps increase the amount of time your body or particular muscles can perform a task such as walking or trimming hedges.
Proprioception exercises help with balance and decrease your chance of re-injuring the same joint or body part again.
Your own personalized program will be a combination of all of these various exercise types. The correct combination will speed you toward full recovery.
